Learn about Kwanzaa with BookFlix!

BookFLix Site

Every year, for seven days beginning December 26th, African Americans celebrate their heritage during the Kwanzaa holiday. Here are a few ideas on how to use BookFlix to teach young students or patrons about Kwanzaa and the meaning behind the holiday:
  • Use the pair, Seven Candles for Kwanzaa and Kwanzaa, to introduce children to the tradition of Kwanzaa and the meaning behind the holiday.

  • Activate students' prior knowledge by having them talk about various winter holiday celebrations. Why do they celebrate? How do they celebrate? Are there special food or decorations prepared for this celebration?

  • Provide students or patrons with art materials. Have them make a zawadi. After the group has finished, place all zawadi in a box and let children select a gift.

  • Teach children how to count to ten in Swahili: moja, mbili, tatu, nne, tano, sita, saba, nane, tisa, kumi.

  • Using green and yellow construction paper, have students or patrons make an ear of corn for each child in their household, and glue the corn to the mkeke.
For additional activities that complement lessons about Kwanzaa and all of the winter holidays, visit the Scholastic Winter Holiday web site. The site lets kids learn about the holidays through different interactive scrapbooks, make their own scrapbook, and send holiday eCards to friends and family.

Winter is almost here
Winter
Winter is quickly approaching and some areas have already seen their first snowfall. Use the pair, The Snowy Day and Snowy Weather Days or Snowflake Bentley and Snow, to introduce students to some of the activities and events that are unique to winter such as snowing, shoveling, and sledding.

The video storybooks and photographs in the nonfiction eBooks will help build mental models for those students who have never seen snow before!
