Sapporo, Japan, hosted the 1972 Winter Games. Karl Schranz, an Austrian skier, was expelled before the start of the games because of his association with ski manufacturers. Barbara Cochran (above) became the first U.S. gold-medalist in skiing in two decades when she won the women's slalom.
