The Olympic Winter Games were first held in 1924 in Chamonix, France. American speed skater Charles Jewtraw became the first Winter gold medalist when he won the 500-meter race. In the Summer Games of 1924, held in Paris, sports were organized and run by the international federations. Nurmi won five gold medals, and teammate Ville Ritola won four golds and two silvers. Johnny Weissmuller (above), who later played Tarzan in the movies, won three gold medals in swimming for the United States. Tennis made its last Olympic appearance until its reinstatement in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea.
