Writing Rubrics
Use the appropriate rubric below to assess students' proficiency with the writing activity. Evaluate whether students' skills are improving or where they may need additional support or instruction.

Scoring

  • 5: proficient: a high degree of competence
  • 4: capable: an above-average degree of competence
  • 3: satisfactory: a satisfactory degree of competence
  • 2: emerging: a limited degree of competence
  • 1: beginning: No key elements are adequately developed.

Top Ten Inventors: Journal Entry/Personal Response

Name: Score
Conveys feelings/thoughts about subject, including likes and dislikes.  
Describes other stories and experiences from life that subject matter evoked.  
Reveals what was surprising.  
Asks questions.  
Uses standard journal format and style including date and name.

Expository/Informative Writing

Explains an event or process.  
Expresses main idea in an introductory statement.  
Tells why the subject was chosen.  
Presents and explains supporting details.  
Conveys information that brings about understanding of event or subject.
