Formal Assessment Ideas

For Grades 3–4: Top Ten African-American Inventors
Have students go through the How Would You Feel section of Top Ten African-American Inventors as well as the Nominate a Trailblazer activity. Make sure students have edited their articles and printed a copy for formal assessment before publishing online. See Writing Rubric below.

For Grades 5–6: Rosa Parks
Have students go through the How Would You Feel section of Rosa Parks. Make sure students have edited their articles and printed a copy for formal assessment before publishing online. See Writing Rubric below.

For Grades 7–8: Research Paper Writing
Have students publish their papers on the Writing Workshop: Research Paper online and post them on your class homepage or publish them in a printed booklet. Encourage students to read one another's submissions.

Students can also present their learning to their peers with a PowerPoint presentation, a poster board, or an oral report for the class. See Research Writing Rubric below.
