Each month, an author shares his or her thoughts
about reading and the ClassroomsCare mission—to share the joy of books with America’s neediest
children. These author messages for your students are a great way to inspire them to read and get involved.
Ruby Bridges made history the morning she went to her first day of
school in November of 1960. At six years old, she became the first black student to attend an all-white
elementary school in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a grown-up, Ruby spends her time talking to students and
adults about racial understanding and forgiveness and how we can all learn from her experiences. One of
the ways she has shared her story is through her book Through My Eyes.
