Dinosaurs
by: Jonathan I., Grade: 6+

The first dinosaur appeared 240mya and lived on for another 175 million years until there eventual extinction 65mya. During that time dinosaurs evolved into a staggering amount of different species(more than 300 have been named so far)and came in all shapes and sizes. The first dinosaurs were only 1-3 metres long so obviously they didn't take over straight away BUT! they were extremely adaptable. Celophysis was like a cactus, it could conserve water. After 25 million years or so Plateosaurus came onto the scene. Plateosaurus was 9 metres long and could walk on both 2 and 4 legs and ate plants, it belonged to the prosauropod family. Predators like Postosuchus were no match for an adult Plateosaur. In the Early Jurassic Dilophosaurus was one of the biggest predators around but it wasstill only half the size of T-Rex.Meanwhile the Prosauropods were evolving into the huge long necked Sauropods. During the late Jurassic the huge sauropods roamed the land such as the 30 metre long Diplodocus and the hollow boned Camarasaurus. Along side them lived the plated herbivore Stegosaurus with its spiked tail. But the plains weren't a safe place for the gigantic 2.5 ton predator Allosaurus was always on the prowl for sick and injured sauropods. The cretacous period saw the extinction of the long necked plant eaters but in south america sauropods didn't just suvive they got bigger and bigger.Argentinosaurus weighed 100 tons and most scientists agree this is the biggest dinosaur ever found. The carnivores got bigger too. 30 million years before T-Rex came something bigger than paleontoligists had ever seen before Giganotosaurus a 14.5 metre long carnivore related to Allosaurus but way bigger and with a 1.8 metre long head.In the late cretacous then on came Tyrannosaurus 13 metres long and with a 1.2 metre long head this is probally the most famous dinosaur ever. Of course the neighbours needed protection so the locals came up with all sorts of ways to protect themselves.Thick armour, 1 metre horns, fast speed and living in herds to name but a few.But of course no species lasts forever and after 175 million years of ruling the earth the dinosaurs time had to come to an end. From out of space a huge asteroid 10km wide slammed into earthed and marked the end of the age of the dinosaurs. Well thats at least the most popular idea. All sorts of ideas have been thought of such as volcanic activity egg stealers even aliens. Well were sure of one thing any way the dinosaurs were an extremely sucessful group but in the end they died out, even the big ones. Could the same thing happen to us?
