These animals are not native to the Galápagos. They were brought to the islands by sailors who wanted to ensure a fresh meat supply when they returned. The goats have eaten large amounts of vegetation on the islands causing food shortages for many of the native animals including the giant tortoise. The goats also eat bird and reptile eggs.
