Pelican
The pelican is a large seabird with pouches beneath its bill. As a plunge diver, the pelican will dive into the water with its mouth open in order to catch fish swimming below. When underwater, the pelican will trap gallons of water along with its catch, wait a moment to push the water out of its gular sac, and then come back up. Sometimes the caught fish uses the moment’s pause to escape. (Photo: © Galen Rowell/Corbis)
