Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona, United States
The asteroid that created this crater 50,000 years ago was made almost entirely of a nickel-iron combination. It was about 150 feet across and weighed about 300,000 tons! Screaming toward the Earth at a speed of 40,000 miles per hour, this asteroid created a crater on impact almost a mile in diameter and 570 feet deep. (Photo: D. Roddy/NASA)
