The
American Civil War was a conflict that pitted the Northern
states against the Southern states. The war raged for
four years (186165) and was marked by some of the bloodiest
battles of modern history. Huge armies were raised on
both sides. The war not only affected the soldiers but
women and children at home, especially in the Southern
states. Everyone was engaged on supporting the war effort
even when battles were taking place in view of their
homes.
