How to Train Your Dragon by Cressida Cowell

Review by: James G.
Illinois, Grade 7

How to Train Your Dragon is a fast paced book by Cressida Cowell. Ten young almost vikings stood at the bottom of a dangerous cave full of dragons. The smallest boy out of the group was Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, the main character. Hiccup has to train a really small dragon to catch the most fish. The only problem is Hiccup’s dragon Toothless doesn’t listen to Hiccup at all. Hiccup starts telling Toothless jokes, so halfway through the story Toothless starts to listen a little bit. On Thor’sday Thursday, the day where Toothless needs to catch the most fish, Toothless and some other dragons got in a huge fight. The dragon fight caused all the boys to be forced out of their home village, but they may stay for one more day because of rough sea weather. Meanwhile when this is all happening a giant sea dragon is on the beach threatening to eat the whole village.

I like this book How to Train Your Dragon because it has a lot of action, challenges, and all of the suspense. My favorite part was when Fishlegs woke all of the dragons up in the cave, so all the boys had to run for their lives. Another good part was when the two giant sea dragons were fighting each other.

I recommend this book to anyone of likes dragons and a lot of action. How to Train Your Dragon and the rest of the series, books 1-12.
