Alcatraz: Prison for America's Most Wanted by C.J. Henderson

Review by: Shannon R.
Ohio, Grade 7

I was in Reading Lab at school when I came across a book that looked interesting to me. ''Alcatraz'' by C.J Henderson. When I saw the book, I had no idea what the word Alcatraz meant or why there were 9 pictures of men on the cover of it, so I was pretty eager to know. Turns out Alcatraz wasn't a word, it was the toughest prison in the year of 1934, to 1963. It was built by 2 men, Homer C. Cummings and a hired man, James Johnston who helped him. They built it because of the disaster criminals caused to America in the 1920s, ruling the streets and breaking our of prison.Given 5 years this prison turned out well, it was finished August 18, 1934. The men called it ''The Rock'' for short. It was on a far away island in the San Francisco Bay surrounded by ice cold ocean water containing sharks. The prison was nearly impossible to escape.

When you read this book, you'll learn about many of the criminals in Alcatraz, and many struggles of escaping. Though some tried to escape but did they ever come out alive? Another thing I enjoyed about this book was learning about one of the criminals, Robert Stroud known as Birdman. He was called Birdman because of his study and connection he had with the birds in his jail cell.He even got so interested he'd bring in more and take care of all of them. Now this prisoner was one of a kind, it's hard to believe he could of actually been in jail. Read and find out more!
