Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers

Review by: Gustavo A.
New Jersey, Grade 7

A few days ago I finished reading the book Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers. This books genre is for young adults. Mainly for kids around 12 through 14-15 or in middle school. Fallen Angels was one of the first books he has ever written. I believe he was able to relate a lot to the main character since he lived in Harlem and as well went to the army at age 17. This book won the Coretta Scott King award.

The main character would be Richie Perry. He was a 17 year old who joined the army because as he said he didn’t have money to afford college. So for this reason he joined the army. In the army after killing people, he changed. Perry (aka the main character) can have many words to be described. For instance a few are kind, friendly, cool, and many more. The story begins with young 17 year old Richie Perry flying to the army training base. While there he becomes friends with some other new member with a nick name of Peewee. During the time they’ve been there they became good friends. Peewee so said has a profile that said he had an injury. But that was never found. But before going all those soldiers had some hidden facts about the army they weren’t told of. Then they had to go into wars. Now all the soldiers same main objective was to not die…

A few themes in Fallen Angels would be choices, pride, acceptance, sacrifice, survival, and hope. I believe these are the themes because it’s a book that has to do with army and war; I think these just words fit in that topic. In times like this there would be no going back and you have to accept the change you just made.

This book wasn’t fascinating but then again it wasn’t horrible. In my opinion Fallen Angels was ok. Why I believe this book is ok is because there was not much detail for me to be able to explain the other characters. For this reason I only described the number 1 most important character. Also while reading at times it was interesting and other times I was bored while reading.

A book like this I would recommend to people who like to play games to do with war and fights. If you dream of someday being a soldier too Fallen Angels is for you. Also this book can be for you people out there who like some historical type of books. Just keep in mind that reader discretions is advised!?
