Love In The Time Of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez

Review by: Tim L.
Other, Grade 10

When the author describes the beginning stages of love between Florentino and Fermina, this engages the readers because Florentino’s love for Fermina lasts more than a half of a century, and readers become entranced in how his love began. Florentino’s innocent love for Fermina in this part of the story differs greatly from other relationships that Florentino has later on.

This book in general conveys well-developed themes. The theme of “old age love” strikes readers because of the need to reevaluate love: whether it intensifies or diminishes as one approaches the final day of one’s life. Although not completely relatable for youth, external and internal conflicts of the elderly characters suggest that love remains intense and impactful even in their last days. This book should earn a 6 out of 10 because of its themes and connection to love.
