The Black Stallion by Walter Farley

Review by: Davyn S.
Florida, Grade 5

It is a story that shows perseverance and just how strong a bond can be.

Alec and a beautiful Black Stallion are on a ship known as “The Drake”. They are caught in a terrible storm. They are stuck on an island and need each other to survive. After a freak accident leaving the island on fire, it turns out to be a blessing in disguise. A ship sees the smoke and rescues them and takes them home. Alec’s neighbor Henry, who is a former rider of the champion horse Chang, convinces Alec to turn the Black into a race horse. They struggle to do so because you need to have information on the horse’s parents and Alec doesn’t have this information. Alec cuts a deal with the sponsor of the race(the deal was Alec had to finish his exams.) The Black, before the race started, got kicked in the leg by Sunraider. Will Alec and the black still win the race? Will Sunraider be suspended? Read the book to find out.
