Carve the Mark by Veronica Roth

Review by: Sydney W.
Ohio, Grade 10

This is a breathtaking adventurous story full of action and romance that kept me on my seat until the very end. The story of two teenagers’ determination to overcome the corrupt power of a kingdom is told by a young prisoner Akos, and the kingdom ruler’s younger sister Cyra who depicts the story in excellent detail.

Akos is the reason I love this book. His personality and strong will help to shape the story into an adventurous and suspenseful novel. Akos and his brother, Eijeh, are kidnapped by their enemy kingdom, the Shotet. They are taken because of their fates that were told by an Oracle. When inside the kingdom, Akos is forced to use his current gift to help a teenage girl, Cyra, from feeling the pain her current gifts bring her. The relationship between Akos and Cyra is a forbidden romance that causes them troubles in the story. This out-of-the-world story has suspenseful cliffhangers and plot twists that kept me wondering what would happen next. If you want to know whether or not they overcome the rulers unjust powers, and the budding romance between Akos and Cyra, you’ll have to read the story Carve the Mark to find out!
