Other, Grade 10

TITLE: CHERUB: The Recruit
AUTHOR: Robert Muchamore
PUBLISHER NAME: Hodder’s Children’s Books
PAGES: 329

James Choke is a troubled boy who ends up on the wrong side of the law. After a tragic family incident, James is sent to a foster home. In a mysterious turn of events he wakes up, drugged, and lying limp in the back of a van travelling to an unknown location. He is at the base for an organization called CHERUB. A haven for child spies. The main theme of the story is about perseverance, determination and James’ will to survive. Robert Muchamore was born in 1972 in England. CHERUB: The Recruit is his first novel and has won the 2005 Red House Children’s Book of the Year award.

The main character in this novel is James Choke. He is a physically strong, but mentally immature boy. He has a sister called Lauren and his mother, Gwen Choke, runs a shoplifting empire from the couch in their living room. James and Lauren are separated when James gets sent away to CHERUB. Throughout this tale James’ determination is tested and he becomes a mature, young man.

I think this book is great for young adults. It is a serious read but has many funny parts in it. I found this book very absorbing because of the way the author described things in detail. Robert Muchamore wrote the tale well and made you feel like you were right up close and in the action.

I thought CHERUB: The Recruit was an exhilarating read. The account was told with immense detail and the book never had a dull moment. If you enjoy James Bond tales, CHERUB: The Recruit is the right story for you. The adventures never stopped coming. It is a fast-paced, humorous tale and whether you just want a fun read or an exciting story The Recruit is for you!

Word Count: 300

I liked the book because it was fast paced and exciting and made me want to keep turning the pages
