  Loser by Jerry Spinelli

Review by: Sam J.
Massachusetts, Grade 1

The book Loser by Jerry Spinelli is a confusing book. The main characters name is Donald. He is weird, unathletic and considered a nerd by his classmates. Donald doesnít seem to understand that he acts differently. One day Donaldís dad, a mail man, takes Donald to work with him. Unfortunately, it is Sunday and there is no mail to be delivered so Donald makes one hundred letters and delivers them to each house with his dad. While delivering the letters, Donald meets an old woman who uses a walker and they become friends. Donald runs away from school one day because he doesnít want to go to field day. Another child in Donaldís class told him not to come to field day because he was afraid their team would lose because of Donald. Instead, Donald goes to the old womanís house. When Donald is out one winter night he finds out a little girl named Claudia is lost. Donald goes out and looks in alleys and streets for seven hours. At about two in the morning, a snowplow driver finds Donald half asleep. Donald later learns that Claudia was found a half an hour after he went looking and that everyone was looking for him. By the end of the book, some of his classmates start to realize that Donald is special even if a bit weird or ridiculous.
Donald being an outcast was a problem in this story. Donald laughs at everything that sounds out of the ordinary but the weird thing is that he canít stop. Throwing up was very common for Donald until he had surgery because one of his organs was upside-down. After the whole Claudia incident, Donald gets a little more respect. The reason I think he gets more respect is because for the first time in his life he gets picked for a sport.

I think Loser is a mediocre book because Jerry Spinelli didnít get the plot or theme through in a clear way. For example, the book tells what happens in Donaldís life but it didnít really have a main problem for him. On the other hand, some parts were interesting like when Donald was looking for Claudia in a snowstorm. I wanted to keep reading to find out because Claudia could pop up at any second! Overall, Loser wasnít the best or worst book I have ever read
