  Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Review by: Morgan K.

What do you get when you cross a mysterious school with magical children who have been exiled there for doing wrong? You get Hex hall by Rachel Hawkins. Many children have been sent to Hecate (Hex) Hall for doing numerous things such that could expose the Prodigium to any of the human race. This is where Sophie Mercer finds herself after another spell-gone-wrong. For Sophie, Hex Hall is a very bizarre place where she befriends a werewolf, learns about the importance of her father, and discovers herself.

Sophie’s life is getting better, when she gets caught up in a murder mystery where her best friend is the main suspect in a series of bloodsucking crimes. And to make things worse, it seems Sophie will be the next victim, which shouldn’t be so bad since the most popular and powerful (besides herself) girl in the school totally despises her. How will Sophie cope with her problems? Who knows, but at this magical school, anything can happen.

Rachel Hawkins did a great job developing the characters in this book. I especially loved her use of foreshadowing and onomatopoeia. The whole story was written in a suspenseful way with one problem unfolding after the next for Sophie. All the fantasy seemed so real. I don’t know what will come next from Hawkins, but you can definitely be sure that I will be the first get her next work.
