The Clay Marble by Mingfong Ho

Review by: Luis V.
North Carolina, Grade 7

Mingfong Ho's book, The Clay Marble was published in 1991 by a sunburst book. This historical fiction story will live you with your mouth open with it's mood changing from happy to sad to suspense. During the war in Cambodia in the early 1980's near the border of thailand and Cambodia.Dara,a normal 12 year old cambodian girl, and her faily meet Jantu, one year older than Dara, and what's left of her familyafter arriving at refugee camp Nang Chan. After Dara's family thought they were safe war arrived at the camp making Dara's family leave to base without Dara, Jantu, and the baby. jantu made Dara a clay marble for courage, Dara finds her family and Jantu's but another conflict arrives, going back home.

This book tells about courage and the cambodian war. Mingfo Ho succeeded in getting her point across to me. The book gives details about background information like what Jantu's experience was at the hospital. This story was exciting and interesting because of the plot and the conflict of going back home safe. A teacher would like to read this story to his/her students. I would recommend it to all historical fiction readers. I would rate this book a 9 because I liked it and it is so interesting.
