A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

Review by: Maddy T.
Colorado, Grade 11

A Farewell To Arms is a story about an American ambulance driver, Lieutenant Frederic Henry in the Italian army during the first world war. Hemingway portrays Henry showing great bravery in battle but Henry's life lacks real passion until he meets the beautiful English nurse, Catherine Barkley. The two like each other from the moment they meet. At first the two pretend to be in love right away, but eventually their relationship intensifies, blossoming into true love. Henry at one point is almost killed by the army but escapes at gunpoint and returns to his lovely Catherine. The two then decide to take a boat in the middle of the night across the boarder to Switzerland, They have a ''grand time,'' until a tragedy is strucken to the couple.

A Farewell to Arms is by far my favorite book by Erenst Hemingway. This sad love story, set in a period of wars and disasters, keeps the pages turning quickly. YOu will have to see for yourself how this love story ends and how Catherine and Frederic love each other so.
