A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway

Review by: Sarah H.
Colorado, Grade 11

''A Farewell to Arms'' is an interesting book written by Ernest Hemmingway. The setting of the book is in Italy during World War I, and the main character is an American man named Frederic Henry who is fighting in the Italian army. When he gets injured in the war and is sent to a hospital, he meets a nurse named Catherine Barkley who he soon loves, promises to marry, and he has his affair with. After healing, Frederic returns to the war, only to almost get killed and then to later leave the Italian army. He goes to his beloved Catherine who becomes pregnant with his child. They go to Switzerland, and plan to marry after the baby is born. When Catherine goes into labor however a disaster occurs leaving Frederic seemingly lost forever.

I really enjoyed reading ''A Farewell to Arms'' for many reasons. One reason was because the events are so well written that it could make someone's day great or very depressing. I also liked this book because it made me wonder how the book would have been different if the tragedy hadn't had happened in the end. Overall this is a remarkable book that I would definitally read again.
