Nothing But the Truth by Avi

Review by: Sean D.
South Carolina, Grade 10

Nothing But the Truth, written by Avi, is a book about a young boy, Philip Malloy, who hums the National Anthem and is suspended by his homeroom teacher, Miss Narwin. The book is set in New Hampshire in the '90s. Miss Narwin suspends Philip because she finds the humming as a disturbance and disrespectful. Miss Narwin feels that her decisions are correct because the rules of Harrison High School are to remain silent during the broadcast of the National Anthem. Some citizens do not see this as an act of patriotism.

Nothing But the Truth is a novel that does not appease to all of my interests. There are areas where this book could have been more exciting. The book did not expand my knowledge. Some readers might find this book interesting because the book has a moral effect. However, I did not because the plot is too simple and did not catch my eye.
