Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson

Review by: Matt W.
South Carolina, Grade 10

This book takes place in Las Vegas. The narrator and his attorney are assigned to cover a motocross race. While in Las Vegas the the two characters embark on their journey to find the American Dream. The narrators reckless attitude gets the pair into many tricky situations. I liked this book because it captures the everyday life of the American Dream not usually shown in books. This book brings the reader back to reality by describing the many hardships the characters go through in their journey.

The narrator Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo are everyday hardworking citizens trying to make it big. Duke is a reporter sent to Las Vegas to cover a motocross race in the desert. Duke is wild man who lets his imagination take the best of him. He and his attorney get into lots of trouble because the two men can not control themselves. Dr. Gonzo, the attorney is the exact opposite of someone who is down to earth. Gonzo encourages the ideas that Duke comes up with. This causes the pair to end up in strange situations.

This book is both entertaining and informative. Duke and Gonzo are so crazy they keep the reader laughing out loud. Also the story is based on true events, so it informs the reader what not to do when pursuing the American dream in Las Vegas. I would recommend this book to those who like realistic situations with a heavy use of humor.
