  Finally by Wendy Mass

Review by: Elizabeth F.
Maine, Grade 7

Would you trust a woman with a duck-shaped birthmark on her cheek? Would you trust a woman that always seems happy? That’s what Rory Swenson is thinking. But she has no choice. You see, when you’re stuck in a drainpipe during a field trip and the attendees don’t even know you’re missing it would be in your best interest to get back ASAP. In the book Finally by Wendy Mass you join Rory in her countdown and first few days of being twelve. Rory Swenson has been waiting her whole life to turn twelve and she has a list to prove it. Whenever Rory asks for stuff form her parents they have always said, “when you’re twelve, when you’re twelve, when you’re twelve.” She has kept track of all the things they have said “when you are twelve,” so, now even though her parents think that she has forgotten these things, she has a list. It all started when she was seven and asked her parents for a pet and they replied, “A pet is a huge responsibility, you can get one when you’re twelve.” She keeps all the things on slips of paper in a box from her dad’s work labeled “Irregularly Shaped and Broken Pieces.” So 18 hours, 36 minutes, and 52 seconds she will be twelve and she knows what she wants. Through this story you will see that some of the things she wants are not things that she wants to use but things that she thinks will change her. She is not being greedy, she only wants a few things. Okay, so she wants exactly twenty things including getting a cell phone, shaving her legs, getting her ears pierced, wearing makeup, and getting a pet. As she crosses each thing off her list she digs herself into a deeper and deeper hole especially when a movie crew comes looking for extras in time to witness all of Rory’s down’s (there are not many up’s that they can see).

This is a must read for all girls who are turning twelve, or who remember turning twelve. This book will have you laughing so hard it will look suspicious. If you love a book that you can connect to this book is for you. If you like realistic fiction this book is for you. This book is a page turner that will keep you reading way past curfew.
