Battle of the Mountain Man by William W. Johnstone

Review by: Tyler G.
Kentucky, Grade 10

Battle of the Mountain Man is about a gunfighter, who always seems to find trouble, whether he is looking for it or not. It is written by William Johnstone.

Smoke Jenson, is the owner of the Sugarloaf Ranch, where he works constantly on jobs that need to be done there. He and his wife, Sally, have almost no time alone. Smoke’s friends decide that they will give him a break and tend to his ranch for him while he and his wife have some time to themselves. They go to a cabin in the mountains, where one of Smoke’s mountain men friends lived before he died.

Smoke and Sally have a great time enjoying the scenery and having time to spend together, but there is a cattle war going on close by, and the land they are staying on turns into the battle ground. One of the men included in the war is John Chisum, and all that Smoke needs to make Sugarloaf the best ranch around, is one of John Chisums Steers. Now Smoke has a reason to take part in the war.

I thought the book was very good. It really gives details about how mountain men live, and the hardships of living in such an isolated area. It also has a lot of fast paced action, which I really liked.
