Elizabeth was born in Johnston,NY. Elizabeth married Henry B. Stanton who was an abolitionist leader. During the Civil War Stanton worked for the woman's rights and for abolition. After slavery was abolished in 1865, she disliked abolitionist who favored voting rights for blacks but not woman. In 1878, Stanton persuaded Senator Aaron A. Sargent of California to sponsor a woman's suffrage ammendment.
