Most irish people came because of a potato famine. In Ireland potatoes were needed alot. Alot of irish people died of starvation. Just as many left for America. They had high hopes that potatoes were in America. Many people were in steerage, a foul smelling place underneath the deck. If they were lucky, they were in 1st or 2nd class. Everyone rejoiced at the statue of liberty. It meant a better life for them. Some people were stuck on Ellis Island until they could prove they were well or that they weren't crazy.
