I got a hold of Phong Van by e-mail. I chose Dr. Van because he was born in Vietnam a very poor country. His immigration was rough, but now he is happy with his wife and 17 year old daughter.

To get to the U.S. Phong had to escape the Vietnam via Cambodia to reach a refuge camp. He stayed at the camp for five years. It was harder for him than going through Ellis Island because he was put in a Thai military prison. For two months he was subjected to interrogation. He was separated from his family for 13 years. He left his daughter when she was 2 and saw her again when she was 15. He still has the clothes from when he escaped Vietnam. When he first got there he raised his arms up and said,
