I came to the United States because I got adopted.
• Did any members of your family come to the U.S. before you? Who, when, and why did they come here?
I was the first person to come to the United States, but I was with my brother.
• What was your trip to the U.S. like?
Well… I didn’t know how to speak English, so I was kind of scared and exited.
• What was your first impression of the U.S.?
I thought that we were on a different planet.
• Did you bring anything special with you? Why did you bring that item?
I wasn’t able to take anything from my orphanage, but my mom was able to have two of my school notebooks. I also wore clothes that my mom bought me from the stores in Ukraine.
• (For adult immigrant) What did you do for a living before you came here? What do you do in the U.S.?
• (For child immigrant) How does school in the U.S. compare with your old school?
My old school in Ukraine wasn’t really fun, and they called it “Grade 0”. In the United States, the teachers made the day fun with teaching.
• What did you do for fun in the country where you used to live?
I used to play soccer because there wasn’t really anything that I could do.
