Country of Origin: Colombia

What country did you come from?
Colombia. It is the northernmost country in South America.
Which family members came with you?
I came first to the U.S., then my brother and sister came afterward.
What are their names?
Carlos and Mercedes
Why did you leave your country?
I left my country to come and learn English to improve my professional opportunities.
Were there any risks involved?
Not really, since I came on a student visa to study at a U.S. university
How did you feel when you left your country?
Like anyone who would leave their home country for an extended period of time, I missed my family, my friends, my favorite foods, my language and culture.
How did you feel as a new immigrant to America?
It took some time, but I adjusted and learned the American way of live.
How is your live different in America?
In America, families tend to live far from one another, and the focus tends to be more on work in order to maintain a certain standard of living. In Colombia, people donít have all of the material conveniences, but tend to spend more time with family and friends.

Do you regret coming to America?
No. Iím very thankful for the opportunities that the U.S. has provided me. Iíve been able to marry a wonderful lady, have a son, and the privilege to be able to work at a great company.
Do you ever visit your home country?
Yes. I visit every year, and have brought many Americans on my trips so that they can lean more about Colombia. When they visit my country, many people are surprised by its natural beauty and the warmth and friendliness of its people.
