New York

Grade 2, New York
Country of Origin: Ireland

I came from County Clare, Ireland, in 1959 at the age of 22. America has much better jobs and much better payment.

My dad and uncle came here. My dad had come through Ellis Island. His name was Dennis. He was born in 1893. He came over with me but he had come over 19 years before.

I brought a heavy winter coat because it was colder in the USA. I came by boat. Second class. The trip took six days. The boat was named the Britannic. The trip was not unpleasant but my uncle had to sponsor me for 2 years. He had a house and was the captain of a firehouse.

I was impressed by going through a tunnel and seeing a skyscraper. I had never seen them before. My house was in Brooklyn. I was a nurse and still am. My first job was as a nurse in a hospital.
