Grade 10, North Carolina

In Washington D.C, on April 5th, 1968 my mother was on a class field trip. She was 6 years old at the time. Her first grade class was being given a tour of one of the wax museums in the city. In the middle of their tour, the window of the museum was smashed and the building was caught on fire. Smoke filled the room.
This was the day after the civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. People were furious at the loss and riots were started in over 100 cities around the United States. My mom happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. As a six year old, she had no idea what was going on.
