Grade 4, New York
Country of Origin: Dominican Republic

I interviewed Maria. She came from the Dominican Republic in 1970. She came to live in New York City twenty-nine years ago. She came alone on a plane. Maria used her passport to get into the U.S.A. She was very, very happy to be here.
Maria was born in the Dominican Republic. When she first came to this country she only spoke Spanish. She didn't have any friends or family in the U.S.A. Today Maria is retired but when she first came here she had a hard time getting a job. She had to learn English.
Maria is very happy living in New York City. Some of her family from the Dominican Republic came here to live with her. She doesn't miss her country. She came here looking for freedom and she has a better life now.
