John set out for his new beginning. He could hear the engine of the steamboat as he stood, amazed by the sight. There are lots of reasons why he came but, most importantly to escape the famine. I guess you can say he wanted a better life. There were more job opportunities in America. In 1896 John got on the steam boat at the young age of 19. Three weeks after he arrived he got a job as a bricks- mason. John helped build the Immaculate Conception in Conneticut.
John came from Ireland just like his wife Mariah. When I interviewed my grandpa I was surprised he knew so much about his grandparents. What my grandpa remembers most is the quote John said everytime he told the story:
