My grandfather, Wendell Giles, graduated from high school before we joined the war, in 1940. Then he enlisted in the Navy. He was a little bit scared when he received a draft notice right after he enlisted. When he was twenty years old, he served as an aviation radio technician in Oakland, California. He received a lot of training and experience with electronics, which helped him later on in life. My grandfather thought that the President and Congress didnĘt do enough to prevent the war from starting and joined too late. He remembers people trying to desert and being punished very heavily as an example. I wonder what it was like being in the middle of a war. I am just glad that we won and everything is like it is in the world. It would be very different if the Nazis were in charge.
