My grandmother was only five when WWII started. She was very young and not initially effected by it. At the time she was living with her parents in Subasterpool, California. For her, day-to-day life was not very different, aside from the fact that all the Japanese children in her class were missing from her second grade class. Her saddest memory was when her friends were missing. They had been put into relocation camps. Her happiest memory was when people were celebrating because the war was over. Her father had passed away. Her mother went to work in a factory making airplane parts. By the time the war was over, she was ten years old. It had changed her life.
