ImmigrantÆs name: Paullina IntervieweeÆs name: Sadie Country: Vietnam Sadie: What was your name in Vietnam? Paullina: Phuong. Sadie: Why did you come to the U.S.? Paullina: For political reasons. Sadie: How old were you when you came to the U.S.? Paullina: 28 years old. Sadie: How long have you lived in the U.S.? Paullina: 13 years. Sadie: Were you scared when you came to the U.S.? Why? Paullina: Yes, because it is a new country and I do not know any English. Sadie: How did you get here? Paullina: By plane. I was sponsored. Sadie: How is the U.S. different from Vietnam? Paullina: The U.S. had more opportunities for work and the U.S. had freedom. Sadie: What was your life like in Vietnam? Paullina: The government had all of the control and it was sort of a racist situation. Sadie: Does all of your family live in the U.S.? Paullina: Yes. Sadie: Is life better or worse in the U.S.? Paullina: A lot better because we have more opportunities in many things and it is better for children to be here than in Vietnam. Sadie: What were schools like? Paullina: They had schools that had 12 years in elementary school, middle school, and high school. Then came college. So the schools were just the way they are here. Sadie: What was work like? Paullina: DonÆt have enough jobs for everyone because it is a poor country. People had work extra hard for money. Sadie: Did your family struggle in Vietnam? Paullina: Everybody had to work two jobs and work at them hard so yes they did struggle some. Sadie: Did your family come at the same time? Paullina: No, we came in different shifts. Sadie: Is the food different? Paullina: Yes, Totally different. One of the foods that are different is that there is no cheese in Vietnam. Sadie: Would you like to go back to live, visit, or donÆt go back at all? Paullina: I would like to visit but definitely not go back to live. Sadie: Did you have children in Vietnam or in America? Paullina: I had my children in America. Sadie: What was the first exiting thing you did in America? Paullina: To learn how to operate the vending machine in the airport coming from Vietnam!
