Grade 7, Maryland
Country of Origin: Uruguay

I immigrated from the country of Uruguay in South America in 1927. I came to America for a better life. I was the first one from my family to come to America. My trip to America was an adventure because I did not know how to speak the language!

I felt very intimidated when I first arrived here. In my old country, I liked to collect porcelain dolls, so I brought my favorite ones with me to America. When I left Uruguay, I was five years old. I am retired now, but I was the editor of The Readers Digest spanish edition. I also volunteered with the Red Cross.

School in America was quite different, and very difficult for me.
