Nominee Jesse Leroy Brown by Elyce H. Grade 10, California, 1/15/2001 Ensign Jesse Leroy Brown was the first Black Navy aviator. He was born in Hattisburg, Mississippi and went to Ohio State University. In 1948 he received the gold wings of a Naval Aviator. December 1950 his plane was shot down over North Korea.
