The 5th National Dear America Student Writing Contest

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. To enter, student must write a five-day diary that explores a historical event from the point of view of a real or fictional character. Entry must include the following information: student name, age and grade, teacher name, school name, address, and phone number. Mail entry to: Dear America Student Writing Contest, P.O. Box 714, New York, NY, 10013-0714. Entries must be received by March 21, 2011. No other means of entry accepted.

Winner will be selected based on the quality of writing and historical research, clarity of thought, and creativity in presentation. Winner will be notified on or about April 29, 2011. Scholastic is not responsible for late, lost, stolen, misdirected, damaged, mutilated, postage due, incomplete or illegible entries or mail.

Sweepstakes is open to students in grades 3rd through 7th who are legal residents of the United States. Employees, and members of their families living in the same household, of Scholastic Inc., and its parent, subsidiaries, brokers, distributors, dealers, retailers, affiliates, and their respective advertising, promotion and production agencies, (collectively, the “related entities”), are not eligible to enter. Void where prohibited or restricted by law. One entry per person.

There will be one (1) Grand Prize Winner who will receive an all-expense-paid guided tour for two from Portland, Maine, to Plymouth, Massachusetts. Date of travel to be determined by Scholastic in coordination with the winner. Trip includes round-trip coach airfare for the winner and the winner’s parent or legal guardian from the major commercial airport closest to winner's residence (winner and guest must travel together on same itinerary) and three (3) nights hotel accommodations (one (1) double occupancy room) including breakfast; all ground transportation between Portland, Maine and Plymouth, Massachusetts and $400.00 to cover lunch and dinner expenses. (Approximate retail value of this prize is $5,000.00.) Actual value of prize trip may vary depending on winner's residence and seasonal rates. All expenses not specified above, including, without limitation, all federal, state and local taxes and international tariffs, are the winner's sole responsibility. There will be ten (10) Runners Up Winners who will receive a two (2) Dear America Libraries, one for the classroom and one for the winner’s home. (Approximate retail value of this prize is $150.)

All entrants and their parent/guardian, as a condition of entry, agree to release Scholastic Inc., each prize provider in this Sweepstakes, and their respective related entities from any and all liability for injuries or damages of any kind sustained through participation in this sweepstakes and/or use of a prize once accepted.

No cash substitutions, transfers or assignments of prizes allowed, except by Scholastic in case of unavailability, in which case a prize of equal or greater value will be awarded. All matters relating to this Sweepstakes shall be subject to Scholastic’s sole discretion and Scholastic’s decisions shall be final and binding on all entrants and the winner and his or her parent/guardian. The winner, and his/her parent/guardian, will be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and liability/publicity release within five (5) days of notification attempt or an alternate winner may be selected. By accepting the prize, the winner and his or her guest grants to Scholastic the right to use his or her name, likeness, hometown, biographical information, and entry for purposes of advertising and promotion without further notice or compensation, except where prohibited by law. Winner may also be asked to attend and participate in media and/or public relations events (the “Media Events”) designated by Scholastic, prize provider, and/or requested by various media outlets. Upon Scholastic’s request, and subject to winner’s availability, the winner agrees to participate in such Media Events without any further compensation. By accepting the prize, winner agrees to release Scholastic Inc., and its affiliates, subsidiaries, distributors and agencies, and hold each of them harmless, from any claims relating to their participation or non-participation in any Media Events.

The name of the prize winners (available after April 29, 2011), will be listed on the Scholastic website at www.scholastic.com/clubcontests. You may also obtain a name of the winner by sending a self-addressed stamped envelope to: Winners List, Dear American Student Writing Contest, P.O. Box 714, New York, NY, 10013-0714 by May 31, 2011.
