North Carolina, Age 12

Name from her two grandmothers, Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas, 3 years ago. Her grandfather, Alfred Otis, had come to Atchison in 1855, a year after Congress had passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, opening the territories to pioneer settlement. He became a judge and a leading citizen of the town. Amy Otis, Amelia's mother, was known in social circles for her delicate physique, yet in 1890 became the first woman to climb to the 14,000 ft. Summit of Pike's Peak in Colorado. Edwin Earhart, Amelia's father, is a lawyer and sometimes an inventor. He dotes on Amelia and her younger sister, Muriel. But because of his battle with alcoholism, he struggles in his career. Eventually Amelia was sent to live with her grandparents today in their house in Atchison, where she attends school and will spend much of her childhood.
