SOCIAL STUDIES: World History and Cultures

Celebrate Chinese New Year!

The Year of the Goat begins with Chinese New Year in February of 2003. Your class can celebrate along with people all over the world on the Internet — and learn a lot about Chinese culture and history! Would you like to teach a lesson on the Chinese lunar calendar or play New Year songs from places such as Malaysia? Start by checking out the Chinese New Year, where you'll find Web resources for the holiday's history, customs, and Chinese astrology. Your class can grasp how many thousands of years Chinese culture goes back by looking at ancient jade-carving. Explore Taiwan and its history and see how the Lunar New Year is celebrated there. Or go to California, where you can examine Chinese-American immigration and influence, using resources from the Chinese Historical and Cultural Project.
