Gary Paulsen is one of today’s most popular writers of books
for young readers. He is the author of three Newbery Honor books—Dogsong,
Winter Room, and the classic wilderness adventure Hatchet.
Throughout a troubled childhood, books provided comfort and an outlet
for the budding writer’s imagination. “The most astonishing
thing happened,” Paulsen says of one of the major turning points
in his life, when he received his first library card. “This silly
little card with my name on it gave me an identity I had not had.
I felt I had become somebody.”
Paulsen ran away from home when he was 14 to travel with a carnival,
and has lived a life full of adventure and excitement. His wide-ranging
interests and personal experiences form the basis for his stories,
many of which involve themes of survival and human endurance in nature.
He lives in New Mexico with his wife, artist Ruth Wright Paulsen, who
has illustrated several of his books.
