Unit Plan: We Are History: Family Stories

Lesson Plan Title: What is Your Story?
Student Assignment Sheet

Social Studies Assignment
Due <insert date>

Assignment:
We are studying the history of New Jersey this year. We have already begun to explore how we know what happened in the past and how much what we know is through diaries, journals, stories, photos, letters, and objects that families have kept for generations. I have told you some of my family history.

We'll begin our social studies with "family stories."

1. Interview. You may interview any family member you choose. Ask them questions about your heritage. These might include the country from which your family came, when they came to America, some history of your family, interesting facts or stories they would like to share, and/or traditions in your family and why you have them.

2. Practice telling about the information you learned. If there are any artifacts, documents, or photos that you could share with us, we would love to see them.

3. Oral Report. On <insert date> you will share your information with our class. We are looking forward to hearing about all the wonderful and unique families that have contributed to the making of history.
