Tips from Teachers

Magnetic Appeal
Submitted by: Dana Sanders, Cartersville Elementary School, Cartersville, California
My Homepage helps me keep parents connected to what is happening at school. At the beginning of the year (and at all conferences), I use Scholastic’s downloadable parent letter and give parents a magnet with all of my Homepage info on it.
Time-Saver

I taught one of my 4th grade students how to update the homework assignments and made that his class job. Now he updates the information daily, and I don't have to worry about a thing!

KEEP PARENTS AND STUDENTS COMING BACK

Post Scholastic Activities on your Homepage to further your students’ learning at home:

Weather Watch:
Observe clouds in the sky, gather data with weather tools, investigate climate conditions, and analyze to forecast weather. Your students will learn about severe weather and natural disasters that affect their world!

Share What You’re Reading:
Have you ever read a book that was so amazing you told all your friends, “You’ve GOT to read this!”? Here’s your opportunity to let your students share what they’re reading with each other and discover new books based on peer recommendations.

Math Hunt
Your students will stick close as we scour the Web’s great depths. They will hook the important information and then use their skills to answer math challenges as they rise out of the sea. (Grades 5–8)

Make sure you send home your letter to parents so they know your ClassHomepage’s username and password.

Ask parents to fill out the Parent Contact Sheet and save (but don’t post) on your Class Homepage for future reference. This way you can always have their contact info as long as you have Internet access!

Fill out the Substitute Teacher Information Sheet now, so that when you’re out sick your sub won’t be lost in your classroom. Let them know which students have special needs and how to log into your Class Homepage to see what the students have been doing in class.
