Beginning readers
need many experiences with easy-to-read materials. Scholastic Phonics
Readers are an engaging way for children to apply their developing
phonics skills while reading short, enjoyable stories. The purpose
of Scholastic Phonics Readers is to provide children with early reading
success through sound-controlled reading materials and systematic
phonics instruction.
Reading experts Dr. John Shefelbine and Dr. Richard Wagner were key
advisors throughout the development of the Scholastic Interactive
Phonics System. Dr. Shefelbine is a professor in the Department of
Teacher Education, California State University, Sacramento, where
he teaches courses in language and literacy, beginning reading, and
children's literature. Dr. Wagner is a professor of psychology at
Florida State University. He has written numerous articles on assessment,
phonological awareness, and other aspects of early literacy.
