Lesson 6: Travel on the Internet

Student Objective: Self-evaluate and assess the GenerationLink experience.
Time Required: Thirty minutes for student lesson preparation; one hour for lesson with seniors
Materials: Name tags, list of senior participants and student teachers, computers with EarthLink software, Travel Plans Student/Senior Worksheet 6 (PDF), GenerationLink Assessment (PDF), GenerationLink Certificate (PDF) for each student and senior participant, pen/pencil for each student and senior, blank journal for students

Thirty-Minute Prep Before Seniors Arrive (optional):

  1. Have each student put on their name tag and redistribute the name tags of each student’s senior partner, if necessary. Review Travel Plans Student/Senior Worksheet 6 (PDF).
  2. Discuss students' GenerationLink experience, including what they have learned, whether the experience met their expectations, and what they would change about the program.
  3. Distribute GenerationLink Assessment for students to complete. Collect all assessments before the arrival of seniors.

Lesson Directions:

  1. Seat seniors and students in the same pairs as for earlier lessons. Answer any outstanding or new questions pertaining to Lesson 5.
  2. Distribute Travel Plans Student/Senior Worksheet 6 (PDF). Review the introduction together and answer any initial questions. Instruct each pair to complete Section 1.
  3. After twenty minutes, encourage each pair to take a five-minute break. Seniors can also use this time to check their e-mail.
  4. After the break, answer any questions about Section 1. Then, instruct each pair to complete Section 2.
  5. After twenty-five minutes, reconvene as a group and answer any final questions. Thank the seniors for participating in the program and encourage any final questions or comments.
  6. Give each student and senior participant a certificate of participation. Then, instruct students and seniors to go to www.scholastic.com/generationlink and click on “Tell Us What You Think” on the right-hand side of the page. Ask each GenerationLink participant (teacher included!) to complete the short survey and help us develop an even better GenerationLink experience for the future.

Student Wrap-up (optional):

Encourage students to write an essay based on their GenerationLink experience, drawing ideas from their journal entries.
