Lesson 2: Unique Notes

Time required: 40 minutes

Materials: Unique Notes (PDF) student reproducible #2, pen or pencil

Directions:
1. Discuss the importance of note taking when writing research reports.
2. Explain the difference between quoting and paraphrasing. Define plagiarize (to steal ideas or words and pass them off as one's own) and emphasize the importance of taking notes in students own words.
3. Distribute Unique Notes (PDF) student reproducible #2 and read it aloud. Let students work in pairs to complete the worksheet.

Wrap-Up:
Review the Note-Taking Tips with students. Have each student select a book from the classroom library and paraphrase a paragraph of his or her own choice. Have volunteers share their summaries aloud.
